Biographical / Historical
In 1816, Rembrandt Peale founded and incorporated the Gas Light Company of Baltimore, establishing the foundation of what would become the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE). BGE has provided gas and electric services throughout Maryland for over 150 years.
In June 1817, the City of Baltimore contracted the Gas Light Company to lay piping and to light up the streets. In 1817, the company lit the first gas malp at Market and Lemon Streets (now Baltimore and Holliday Streets). The company serviced 3,000 private lamps and 100 public lamps. In 1865, the company purchased crom the Canton Company a tract of land which would later become Spring Gardens Station. In 1906, the company became the Consolidated Gas Electric Light and Power Company of Baltimore" after merging with other local gas and electric companies. In 1955, the company changed its name to Baltimore Gas and Electric Company.
