Biographical / Historical

Starting in 1916,Bethlehem Steel provided steady but dangerous work for tens of thousands of men and women at its Sparrows Point and Fairfield sites. Bethehem Steel was a mojor producer of Liberty Ships during World War II and supplied steel in the construction of bridges and high-rise buildings across the U.S. The Sparrows Point mill was the largest steel producer in the world reaching peak production in the 1950s with a workforce of 33,000 people. Following its bankruptcy in 2001, the plant went through four different owners. RG Steel filed for bankruptcy on May 31, 2012, when the 2,100 remaining steelworkers lost their jobs.

Arrangement

The Bethlehem Steel Collection is has several components. Arranged into 21 series, Categories A - U, arranged by subject, contain the archival materials of the collection, including correspondence, union publications, safety publications, negatives, and photographs. The ship plan collection contains over 10,000 ship plan blueprints and is arranged by flat file cabinet numbers. The technical and plant layout collection is also arranged by flat file cabinet numbers.
