Welcome to the Baltimore Museum of Industry

The Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural heritage institution whose three-part mission is to interpret the diverse and significant human stories behind labor and innovation in Baltimore, cultivate a sense of belonging, and inspire visitors to think critically about the intersection of work and society. To more fully engage the complexities of industrial, labor, and working-class history in and around Baltimore, the BMI’s Collections and Archives Department endeavors to obtain and preserve materials that speak to questions of power and structural inequality in industry and organized labor. The Department preserves stories from and about the people, representing a variety of racial, ethnic, gender groups, and sexual identities, who built and sustained these industrial institutions. Our work aims to institutionalize best practices and new directions in archival and collections management and reflect the most current scholarship in labor history. Since its founding in 1976, the museum has accessioned nearly 3,000 collections of historical objects and archival, comprising some 50,000 unique assets from over 1,000 companies and individuals.
